I guess almost everyone is familiar with the recorder, a type of flute that
is often used in school to introduce young kids to the basics of music. The most common kind is made out of plastic and about
a foot long, but recorders do come in different sizes and keys. I know this because I own quite a collection of them. My favorite
one is as big as a clarinet and made of wood. I like it because it has a nice low tone.
Although I do enjoy playing the recorder, I rarely get around to it except at
Christmastime. During this busy time of year, I always manage to get in a couple of sessions, just sitting at home playing
for my own enjoyment. Christmas carols sound wonderful on the recorder, especially the really old ones like "Good King Wenceslas."
Yes, live music can make the holiday season or any occasion more magical, but
you don’t have to hire a musician. Instead, why not become the musician by taking lessons? Equipped with the knowledge
of a few guitar or piano chords, and a book of carols, you, your spouse, or your kid could be the life of the family Christmas
party.
If you are looking for a special holiday gift, choose the one that can make
the holidays or any day special. The gift of music lessons will enable its receiver to experience the joy and magic of making
music.
The Ken May Show
Musical joy and magic is made a couple times a year when I present a talent
showcase where my music students and special guests perform for family, friends, and anyone who wants to have a great time
enjoying the show. This totally unique and entertaining event most recently took place on Sunday, October 3, 2004 at T-Bone
Tom's Restaurant in Kemah, Texas.
I want to thank the people who made it such a great success: my students; the
Log publications; T-Bone Tom’s Restaurant; my famous brother, Mark May and his band; and everyone else who participated.
My next show featuring my students will be a performance of holiday music in
December at one of the local malls. Check www.kenmay.com for date, time, and location.
